Steve McCabe MP (Birmingham Selly Oak) has expressed his disappointment with the outcome of a Judicial Review which dismissed the case bought by campaigners BackTo60 against the government’s handling of the rise in the state pension age for women born in the 1950s.
The Birmingham MP has vowed to fight on with campaigners and has called on Boris Johnson to bring forward transitional arrangements in the Queen’s Speech next week.
Thousands of women born in the 1950s were not given enough notice of the rise in their state pension age, leaving them with little or no time to make the necessary financial arrangements to cope for years without a state pension.
Most campaigners support pension age equality but say that the government was discriminatory in the way it implemented the rise and failed to properly notify affected women of the changes.
Steve McCabe MP, who sits on the Work and Pensions Selection Committee, has been urging the Government to consider implementing transitional arrangements for those women affected.
The policy on accelerating the increase in State Pension age has affected over 3 million women nationwide. 37,000 women across Birmingham have suffered greatly from the 1995 and 2011 Pension Acts that increased the State Pension Age for women born in the 1950’s.
Steve McCabe MP said:
“I know campaigners will be very disappointed with the result of the Judicial Review today but we must fight on and I am sure they will be looking at taking their case to the Supreme Court.
“My message to Boris Johnson is, stop ducking your responsibilities, do the right thing and bring forward transitional arrangements for these women in the Queen’s Speech next week.”
