Steve McCabe MP calls for action to bring fairer energy prices for all

Steve McCabe, Member of Parliament for Birmingham Selly Oak, is supporting calls for energy market action, as shocking figures reveal people in Selly Oak are over-paying £6, 040, 000 a year on their energy bills, meaning £255 per household.

An inquiry by the Competition and Markets Authority has found that energy customers were paying on average £1.4 billion a year more than would be the case in a competitive market.

A cross-party group of MPs, including Steve McCabe, has written to the Government urging it to ensure that all customers can benefit from fair energy prices. All three of the largest political parties called for a price cap in their manifestos, but the current Tory Government plans would only target a fraction of those on rip-off tariffs.

Mr McCabe said:

“In the General Election, the Prime Minister pledged action to help the 17 million energy customers across the country on standard variable tariffs. It is time that she now takes this action, as people in my constituency are getting ripped off.

“It is outrageous that the Big Six are getting away with ripping off the hard working people of Selly Oak constituency. Much more needs to be done to protect those people in my constituency who are struggling to pay their energy bills.”
