47% at risk of Carbon Monoxide poisoning – are you alarmed?

Birmingham Selly Oak MP, Steve McCabe, has urged people living in the Midlands to protect themselves from the deadly threat of Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisoning.

Recent research from the Carbon-Monoxide – Be Alarmed! Campaign found that 47% of people in the Midlands and over 27 million people across the country are at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, because they do not have a CO alarm fitted in their home.

Each year 50 people die from CO poisoning in Britain and another 4, 000 are treated in hospital. Carbon monoxide poisoning can affect people before they notice there is a problem, and while 85.6% of people in the Midlands have fire alarms in their homes, nearly half that number do not have CO alarms. As a result, they are putting themselves at risk.

Carbon Monoxide alarms can be bought for around £15 from many high street shops and could save your life.

Steve McCabe MP said:

“It is deeply worrying that 47% of people living in the Midlands are at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning and almost 3 in five people don’t associate things like headaches, nausea, dizziness and breathlessness with CO poisoning. Simply raising awareness of these symptoms could save many lives and that’s why I am supporting the CO – Be Alarmed! Campaign. Make sure you and your family are protected by getting a Carbon Monoxide alarm.”
