Brian Lee from Cotteridge who drives a Hackney Carriage for TOA Taxis was nominated by Steve McCabe MP in the first ever Parliamentary Taxi and Private Hire Awards for his selfless support of Veterans’ Day at Swanshurst School.
Brian Lee was among just a few drivers to be awarded a Runner Up Award in the first Parliamentary Taxi and Private Hire Awards for his services to the community. A special awards ceremony was held in the Palace of Westminster on Tuesday 15 October.
In July every year Steve McCabe MP and Swanshurst School in Billesley welcome Veterans from across Birmingham and the West Midlands for a day of thanks and learning. For many years Brian Lee from TOA Taxis has volunteered his services and picked up Veterans free of charge so they can attend this special day.
For the past 6 years Mr Lee has picked up Veterans from Walsall who served in the Suez Canal Zone, without his support these Veterans would not be able to attend this important annual event.
Speaking at the awards, Steve McCabe MP said:
“It was an easy choice to nominate Brian for the Parliamentary Taxi Awards. Many of our Veterans are no longer able to drive or use public transport and each year Brian volunteers his taxi services free of charge to make sure our Veterans who served in the Suez Canal Zone can attend Veterans Day at Swanshurst School. It is great to have a chance to recognise Brian’s contribution to our community here in Birmingham.
“Thanks also to TOA for their continued support, without the generous support of local businesses like TOA we wouldn’t be able to hold Veterans’ Day each year.”

“It is lovely award, thank you Steve for nominating me. It is a pleasure to support Veterans’ Day every year, I know the vets really appreciate it and the students at Swanshurst School love it. It is a lovely day and great to see young people mixing with the old.”
