Stirchley’s very own Kolkata Lounge has been nominated by Selly Oak MP, Steve McCabe in the annual MP’s Tiffin Cup competition.
Steve asked locals which was their favourite local curry house and the majority said Stirchley’s very own Kolkata lounge. The competition seeks to find the best South Asian restaurant in Britain and nominees are put forward by their local MPs.
Established in 2007, Kolkata Lounge boasts an array of fantastic South Asian cuisine and has quickly established itself as a favourite amongst Stirchley locals. Manager, Ameer Hussain worked in his father’s restaurant on the Pershore Road as a teenager and told Steve that when the opportunity arose for him to open his own restaurant in Stirchley he jumped at it.
The Tiffin Cup competition started in 2006 and is renowned for attracting high quality judges. One restaurant from every region is shortlisted and invited to participate in the Grand Final cook-off event held in the House of Commons, as judged by MPs and guest celebrities.
Steve McCabe MP said:
“I am very pleased to nominate local favourite, Kolkata in this year’s Tiffin Cup Competition.
“Stirchley has many brilliant South Asian restaurants but after asking locals which curry house deserved to be nominated I was keen to put Kolkata Lounge forward for the Tiffin Cup award because of its popularity. They offer a variety of delicious curries from different regions in South Asia. I hope that the hard to please judges recognise the quality South Asian food that Kolkata produce every day here in Stirchley.”
