Local MP presents petition in Parliament to Save Baverstock Academy

This week local MP Steve McCabe (Birmingham Selly Oak) presented a petition in the House of Commons with over 1,500 signatories calling on the Government to Save Baverstock Academy.

Steve has been working with the Save Baverstock Group, made up of parents and local residents, to fight for the school’s future. Together they have collected over 1,500 signatures all calling for the Government to save the school.

Steve McCabe met recently with Lord Nash, the Minister responsible for Academies, to ask what progress has been made on the Department’s promise to mount a rescue operation. To his shock, he discovered that the Department for Education has gone back on previous assurances and is once again considering closing the school. This revelation comes just 3 months after Sir David Carter, the most senior Civil Servant responsible for academies, committed to saving the school.

Steve McCabe MP and local people in Druids Heath are livid and are demanding answers about what has been happening and exactly how much effort has been put into saving the school.

Steve McCabe MP said:

“On Wednesday I presented a petition in the House of Commons calling on the Government to Save Our Baverstock. Over 1,500 people have signed the petition which should send a clear message to the Government and the Education Secretary that the local community are completely behind the school.”

“We won’t let this go, if it’s a fight they want they can have one. Baverstock is a story of government neglect, government failure, indifferent officials and ill-informed ministers. The contempt shown for the people of Druids Heath and the surrounding area is unbelievable, so much for Theresa May standing up for ordinary folk.”
